There are about 200 watchtowers (Torre Vigia or Torre Atalaya or Torre Almenara) or fortresses built along the coast of southern Spain. All with the aim of looking out for intruders from the south.

Estepona has seven such towers that stand to this day. From west to east:

Torre de Arroyo Vaquero
Two medieval towers share this name; one within the urbanization (residential complex) of Bahia Dorada and the other inland near the golf club of Estepona.

Torre de Saladavieja
This unusual tower is signposted on the south side of the town of Estepona.

Torre de Padrón
This tower now stands on the grounds of the Kempinski Resort Hotel.

Torre de Velerín
The tower is named after the Velerín River that flows nearby.

Torre Guadalmansa
The tower is named after the Guadalmansa River that flows nearby.
