What’s Christmas in Malaga like? What will be open? What can we see and do? When do the Christmas lights go on? It’s one of the biggest Malaga events and one we get lots of questions on. To answer them, we thought the best thing was to create a Christmas in Malaga FAQs blog post. If the answer to your question isn’t here, let us know and we’ll add it in!
Note that some dates for events 2023 in this post have yet to be confirmed.
In 2023, the expected date for the Malaga Christmas lights switch-on will be Friday 24 November at 7pm. Note that this isn’t the official date – bookmark this page for updates.
What do the lights in Calle Larios look like?
The 2023 display hasn’t been confirmed yet. In 2022, 16 celestial angels on 32 columns stretched along the entire length of the street. We think it could be repeated in 2023, but watch this space for updates.
What about the famous light and sound shows?
Again, we don’t have official confirmation. In 2022, the light and sound shows took place at 7, 8.30 and 10pm every evening except 24th and 31st December until 6 January. B
ut don’t worry if you miss the music, the lights are very pretty and there’ll be a great Christmas atmosphere!
The lights are switched on every evening over the Christmas period between 6.30pm and midnight (2am at weekends, 24th and 31st December and 5th January.
Festive drones 2022
120 drones will be providing some festive fun over Malaga Port at 8.30pm on the following dates: 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 December and on 23 December at 7.30pm. The best place to see the drones doing their thing is from the Palmeral de las Sorpresas, Plaza de la Marina, Muelle Uno and from the walkway up to the Gibralfaro.
Christmas lights in the Botanical Gardens 2022
The Christmas garden returns to the lovely botanical gardens for another year. The 2022 edition is called Stela, A Journey to the East, based on the Wise Men’s journey through Persia, Babylonia and then to Bethlehem. All lighting is LED this year in keeping with the national push to save energy, but expect a stunning show combining the gardens, its monuments and lights.
Cirque du Soleil on ice 2022
This world-famous circus group return to Malaga during December to perform Crystal, all the usual breath-taking acrobatics and stunning mise-en-scene, but this time on ice. The arena at the Martin Carpena Sports Stadium will become an ice rink for 9 days from 11 to 18 December. Tickets cost from €35 and are available online here.
